DEHKO: An Interview with 2 Music Stars In The Making
Sam and Jordan Dehko; who are more known by their moniker Dehko have been sparking a new wave with their abilities to fulfill the role as DJ and Producer all the while etching their name in the world of music as a star in the making. Based in Detroit, Michigan, Dehko originally garnered attention after releasing their debut single 'Deep Relief' which Dehko exclusively produced and engineered themselves. Despite being a music enthusiast for nearly eight years, Dehko didn't start their career until recently. They started doing house parties and Sam Dehko would carry all of the equipment and DJ while Jordan would assist as a fellow hypeman and opportunist (taking advantage of networking opportunities) so Sam could just vibe out. He decided to spend time honing their craft and getting better at producing. Dehko tells stories with their music and tells them in a way that allows the listener to picture the exact setting they found themselves in when they wrote it. With their eye's wide open and the mission clear 'Dehko' has already begun the process of taking over Michigan and has since laid their sights on building their fan base across the United States. We got to sit down with 'Dehko' for an interview. Here's what they had to say:

Rep - Thank you for taking the time to sit with us and answer some fan related questions Dehko."
Dehko - No problem thank you for having us
Rep - Okay lets get right in to it
Do you remember your first time in the studio? Tell us about it.
So we both started at different times in our life. Sam started first on FL studio on a laptop and as I started to get the hang of it my brother came on board and brought a creative flow to the mix. Jordan had a love for music too but didn't get in the studio until after Sam had started pushing forward with producing his own sound primarily EDM. Sam started as a DJ first so he took that knowledge and that awareness of what people enjoyed live and put those elements in to the sounds he was producing. My first studio session I downloaded a project file from the internet which kind of gave me an outline. So I switched out the sounds with sounds I liked and that resonated with me and what I noticed people were enjoying at live sets. The hardest part about our first time in the studio was the learning process. There was so much to learn!
Your first single 'Deep Relief' was a great introduction to your sound. What can new listeners expect to learn about you guys from your debut project.
They can expect to hear a lot more energy - insane drops, heavy bass and basically music you would hear at a Rave. We want to make music that shows off our lifestyle and being DJ's and hosts of epic parties we tend to have a lot of exciting things going on. So we want our sound to be exciting and fun - so this project will be a lot different from our initial single release. That song is more slow, melodic and trance-like. Our new material will be literally the opposite.
Tell us about the producers you worked with on this project. Why them?
We have one producer from Brazil that will be featured on the project and he goes by the name Izlit. He is about 17/18 years old and we found him on YouTube and had to reach out. We really liked his sound and his community of listeners so we sent him the song "Bring It Back" and he loved it. So we asked him if he could add something to it and from there we just started exchanging ideas until it was complete. We are really happy with how this record turned out.
You grew up in Detroit, Michigan - what has the place you grew up in done for you and other aspiring artists?
Detroit, Michigan is where techno started so its a very cultural place when referring to EDM. So not only is there a huge Hip Hop background it also has a huge Electronic vibe. The energy here and the vibe here has really rubbed off on us (we tend to try and start a wave versus following it). Most artists here are just like that. Living here we have learned from DJing it's not just about giving them the most popular music its about giving them something new that they will like. You become a great DJ when your listeners can say that your sets are the best and you help them fill up their playlists for the next month lol. As far as production goes with the type of music we make and provide at our events when we DJ - it made since to create Electronic music in the birthplace of Techno.
Do you guys have any fears about this music industry? How would you take someone pushing your music in a different direction?
Our biggest fear about the music industry is losing ourselves in the midst of everything. Becoming something we are not and for some reason being taken down such a different direction that we forget why we started doing this in the first place. If someone wanted to take our music in a different direction I would embrace it but I would want to know the (why). Our main goal as artists is to bring a certain energy and we don't want that to be put in jeopardy. With EDM we love experimenting and genre-bending (so in a sense we definitely would enjoy a different perspective especially from a professional who can breakdown their idea's in a way that makes sense to me and Jordan as creators.
Describe today's EDM music scene if you can in just a single word.
I'd say Diverse because everyone is venturing out on their own path. Producers are experimenting with Bass-House and Grimey-House and are even taking sounds to a place people didn't even think existed. The EDM music scene is alive and well. There's literally no rules in the EDM scene. Somewhere, someplace there is going to be someone who enjoys hearing something different (something unique). EDM as a genre will be around for a long time because it has the capacity to fuse so many different genres together.
Describe your perfect listener with just a single word. What are they like?
They would be "open-minded". A lot of our fans currently follow us and actually come and visit our shows. A lot of them are Hip Hop heads but they can tolerate EDM as well. Many of them enjoy fusing the two genres. You never know what people will like or can tolerate long enough to realize they do like it. But of course you have a lot of people who don't catch on to things until everyone else is doing it. So our perfect listener would be open-minded to accept what we have to offer.
Give us a random fact about Dehko - that people don't already know.
Hmmmm, something that people don't know... We'll we played paintball as like a legit sport for years (literally) - like I'm a really good shot. In our free time we enjoy snowboarding, skiing, long-boarding, surfing and just about anything that involves a board. Our whole life thus far we've lived off the lake so we really got acclamated to the water.
In Conclusion - what can current and new music fans expect from Dehko for the remainder of 2018?
They can expect a ton of new music, we stay consistent with our events and shows (so people will continue to see us). You can expect jaw-dropping music and further access to our day to day life. We really want to incorporate our lifestyles in to our music and find creative ways to express that to our current and future fans. We really want you to feel like you know us or at least that your getting to know us.
